Ceremonies and Beliefs

By: Jessica Brewer

All doctors are important to the Chippewa's beliefs.  Doctors helped heal the sick in return for tobacco or food.  They believed that the Great Spirit teaches doctors what roots and plants to give the sick.  Doctors tried to do medicine dances as often as they could.  The Chippewa practiced songs that would heal the sick.

The Chippewa gather very often to pray.  They believe in praying while smoking pipes because the Chippewa believe that the smoke will send their prayers to their gods.  They also scatter sacred tobacco while they prayed.  When the Chippewa pray they wear ceremonial clothes.

The Chippewa have certain clothes for ceremonies.  The clothing for ceremonies are long and bright.  They have a lot of color.  A few of the colors are blue, yellow, and red.  The Chippewa use a big amount of beads to decorate ceremonial clothes.

The Chippewa have two important gods.  They are Kichi-Manitu and Manitu-K.  Kichi-Manitu is found in water, rocks, and trees.  Manitu-K is found in weather and the four directions ( North, South, West, and East.)
