Indians Yesterday and Today

The Eskimos or Inuit came to Alaska from Asia about 8,000 years ago. Eskimo means “eaters of raw flesh”, but they prefer Inuit, which means “The real people”. The Inuit live in the sub artic, from Russia to Greenland, across Alaska and Canada.  They have learned to live in the cold.  Their land is frozen all but three months a year.

The Inuit depended on animals for food, clothing, tents, boats, tools, heat and light. They traveled year round for food. In the winter they travel by dogsled, and by boat in the spring and summer. The food they hunted by land was lemmings, caribou and musk oxen. The food they hunted by sea was seal, salmon, whales and walrus.

The Eskimos don’t live like they used to many years ago. They often have houses of wood.  There might be central heating, a bathroom and a built-in kitchen with a stove and refrigerator. In the living room there might be television, radio, stereo and perhaps a video-cassette recorder. They also go to school and wear many modern clothes

The future of the Eskimos is most likely good and bad. The good is they’re a strong culture and they’re probably going to stay there. The bad is that the kids are watching TV too much and want to become different from the old culture.
