Living Off the Land

Charles D.

The Hopi communities are all over the desert.  They live with clans of relatives.  The male members of the clan used kivas as underground rooms inside their houses.  Some Hopi's earned money from carving, painting, weaving baskets, jewelry, and pottery.  Some of the Hopi's continue to follow traditions from their old way of life.

The Hopi ate many foods.  They ate things like melons,  gourds, corn, peaches, and other juicy things. They also enjoyed meat, like squirrels, gophers, rabbits, and buffalo.  The men planted and harvested the crops.  The women grinded the blue corn to make Piki bread.  The Hopi also ate pinion cones and nuts.
