The Mesa Verde hunted a lot! Only men hunted
in the Mesa Verde tribe. The men killed animals like coyote, bear, rabbit,
buffalo, fox, beaver, eagle and javelins. The meat that the Mesa Verde got from
the animals was either made into stew or roasted. The Mesa Verde had many ways
of
hunting.
The Mesa Verde used a lot of tools.
Tools were made from either wood, stone or bone. They made ax heads
from
granite, which was formed by rubbing one rock against
another. With stone axes, the Mesa Verde cut sandstone into building
blocks, which were used to make their homes. Knives, drills, arrowheads, needles
and scrapers were used for shaping stones and cutting. Tools were used
frequently in the Mesa Verde.
The Indians made pots out of clay, which was found in the Mesa
Verde soil. All pots were made by coiling strips of clay into a circle and
pinching them together to form a wall. The clay tu rned a grayish-white after it
had been baked. The Mesa Verde pots made geometric designs painted on them in
black. They painted berry juices and minerals on the pots, using the brush of
the Yucca plant. There were two types of pottery: one used for cooking and one
for eating. Cooking pots did not have painted designs. Instead, they had pinch
marks in the clay which were rough, which made them easier to handle. The Mesa Verde made a lot
of pots!
