Indians Yesterday and Today

Hunting is something Ojibwa men did every Winter.  On the hunt they trapped  mink, otter, muskrat, rabbit, fox, and beaver.  They hunted bigger animals : deer,  moose , bear and wolves.  Even though they killed these animals they believed that these animals were relatives of t heirs .  They thought that the animals were placed on earth by the Great Spirits to help them live in the long cold Winters and hot Summers.  Some Ojibwas can't hunt because they live in the city.

City Living is something some Ojibwas do.  Some Ojibwas live in cities like Chicago,  Milwaukee, and Minneapolis.  Many have found jobs such as fishing guides, nurses, and teachers.  Some Ojibwas can't get used to living in the city.  Indian centers in big cities help  deal with city problems.

One example of a center they have is a cultural  and language center, opened in Spring by Mille Lacs band of Ojibwa Indians .  It lets people experience sugar bushing, wild rice harvesting, and learning Ojibwa language and culture.  People that attend can chose from 3-day, 41/2-day, or weekend sessions.  2 of the areas you can learn about are Ojibwa ceremonies and how to make a wigwam. It is thought to be the most complete tribal culture center.
