Indians Yesterday and Today

Every fall Chippewa gathered wild rice. These people divided into small groups and to go where wild rice grew.  They did this for many weeks. Using a long stick Chippewa men steered the canoe throw the lakes.  While they did this, the women got the rice and put it in the canoe.  When the canoe was full the people came back ashore.

Late in spring Chippewa set up a village  to fish and to pick berries.  Although fishing all year, this time they did it with family.  They caught the fish by spearing and setting traps. Catching salmon, sturgeon, and whitefish.   Usually women and children picked berries, fruits, and nuts.  Cranberries were eaten fresh.  Raspberries were made to a pudding.  This also continued though the summer.

The Chippewa did many things after the harvest.  On the day after they gathered wild rice was time to feast.  After the feast they played lacrosse.  The two teams  carried long sticks with a basket  around the end.  This was used to pass the ball to there teammates. Lacrosse was there favorite game to play after the harvest.
