Indians Yesterday And Today

By:  Hayes G.

In the 1800s, America bought land from Mexico.  Americans came to that land to look for gold and silver.  The Navajos lived were the Americans were looking for gold and silver.  Then the Navajo and Americans fought.   The Americans won in the end and a man named Christopher (Kit) Carson  forced 8,000 Navajos off there land.  Children were forced to go to boarding schools and grown-ups went to a place called Fort Sumner.

Life at Fort Sumner was hard.   Navajos missed their land. 2,000 Navajos died of starvation and disease!  4 years after they had arrived Americans saw that they couldn't make Navajos like Pueblo Indians.  They made a treaty with the Navajos.  Now Navajos don't live at Fort Sumner, so they have time for hobbies

Weaving is something Navajos do today.  One of the girls chores is weaving.  Navajo sell things they weave to make money.  The Navajo started weaving with sheep's wool.  Some Navajo women still use vegetable dies for color.  Navajo women still weave blankets, rugs, and belts from wool.
