Living off the Land

By: Bradley F.

The Navajo got the Spanish's help to survive.   In 1600s, the Spanish help the  Navajo by giving them sheep and horse from Europe.  They began using the sheep by weaving clothing blankets and rugs.  They also killed  sheep and took their food.  The horse could travel a long distance on raiding parties.  The Navajo did not like the Spanish.

The Navajo Indians houses are called Hogan's.  The Navajo made their houses out of 3 things mud,  poles and tree bark.  Navajo Indians used 4 supported poles. The Navajo Indians build their doorways where the door open to the east so they could  get in.  Today Navajos still build their Hogan's.  They make four sided Hogan's and Hogan's that look like cone shapes.

The Navajo travel a lot.  Many years ago Navajo travel south.  They reach southwestern united states.  They met the Pueblo Indians.  The Navajo Indians learn how to plant corn, beans, squash and melons from Pueblo Indians.
