Nez Perce

Living off the Land

By: Max A.

In August, the Nez Perce men would go on a hunt. They would kill elk, deer, moose, and bear.  Then, they would have a feast.  They would bury the bones after the meal.  They Would do this every year.

The Nez Perce hunted buffalo in September.  They would go on the hunt with another tribe.  Every part of the buffalo was used.  The buffalo was a sacred food to the Nez Perce.  But buffalo meat does not taste good.

In November, the Nez Perce women would go into the forest. They would go into the forest.  They would dig up roots with a  long, sharp stick.  The women dug up kouse, bitteroot, wild carrot, camas bulb, nuts, and berries.  The kouse was for stews.  The Nez Perce would do these things for Thanksgiving, or Q'eunyit.
